"The Faculty of Dance of Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan announces its last production this year – “Tapestry…inspired by the animal kingdom”. This is a continuation of the highly successful traditional dance series and winner of Boh Cameronian Award Audience Choice Award for Best Dance Production 2006. This year, ASWARA has chosen to showcase traditional folk and classical dance repertoire that takes its inspiration from the animal kingdom. Joseph Gonzales, creator and Artistic Director, “The title of show refers to the colourful collage of dance cultures that make Malaysia what it is – and this time around, to look at how many traditional dances have taken their inspiration from the animal kingdom! From Johor, or Sarawak to Kelantan, it is fascinating to note that a common source of ideas for choreographers is nature and the animal kingdom and we wanted to highlight this fact – which is a little quirky, keeping the idea that folk traditions can be fun too! One of the main aims of ASWARA is to ensure the preservation of traditions and this is why Tapestry is an important annual production since it is not only danced by about 60 dancers under the age of 25! Furthermore, not enough organizations produce public performances that highlight Malay, Chinese and Indian dance to keep traditions alive and make it relevant to contemporary audiences.”

For this performance, studio work and practice is transferred to the auditorium by culling the talents of all the lecturers who are well-known to Malaysian audiences through the work through all these years. At the Faculty of Dance ASWARA, young performers are educated and exposed to a variety of genres, with the aim to produce truly well-rounded Malaysian artists of the future. Tapestry 2011 hopes to educate, perpetuate, sustain while not forgetting to entertain. The inclusion of dance forms of the various communities into the curriculum of ASWARA allows us to be truly known as the ‘National Academy of Culture, Arts and Heritage’.


This process of staging traditional dance began with more intimate evenings such as Malam Terinai, Dari Mengadap Rebab ke Moden, and Jendela more than 10 years while slowly building the repertoire and audience appreciation. This promises to be the most different performance from the recent years. The Faculty of Dance hopes that this production will flame the fires of patriotism and the pride of being Malaysian. “Reclaiming our past has to begin by first learning to know and love what it constitutes! Our cultural heritage is diverse.” continues Joseph Gonzales, who has been the Dean of the Faculty of Dance since 1999. “We wish to train young talents to achieve excellence in numerous genres of dance that exist in Malaysia. It is a tall order but we have raised the bar and we must work towards our goals bearing in mind that Malaysia does not have a tradition of arts education in public schools. I urge every citizen and expatriate in Malaysia to come and experience the performance and appreciate the beauty of our traditional dance heritage.”
