Persembahan Cahaya 2009- ANNEX CENTRAL MARKET

Assalamualaikum
I went for a performance (or an exhibition) called the light show 09, in Annex (behind CM there...). I reached there about 8.05pm and get shocked by the attendance of the audiences..its like super amazing, seeing this many people willing to spend time for this kind of performance. I met old and new friends there; Abg Said, Abg Dino, Abg Hamid, Kak Ala, Abg Kenet, Khairul, Shah, and many more.

To be honest, I really don't know what was the show about and my 1st impression seeing the wonderful light craft made of recyclable material I had a thought that this is an exhibition NOT a dance performance. And after awhile there was an announcement saying that there will be a performance that will be performed by Aida Redza and Friends: Abg Pirul, Pak Sukarji, Suhaili, Anne James, and another one fella. Audiences were advice to stand behind the black tape due to the performance will be performed in the black tape area. I purposely bold that phrase coz how can we tell; Are we standing in front or behind the black tape. This announcement made coz the gallery was the stage for the performance. Even though I've seen this kind of performance before done by my beloved Ms Mew in Petronas art gallery long long time ago, but I still excited to see the out come of the show.

For the performance, music was by hardesh singh. I like the sound scape that they choose to accompanied the performance but too be honest, I don't know how was the music gel with the dance. Hardesh used terinai mengadap music as the base of the sound add sound sample on top of it, which is fine. But the relation still bothers me.

The dance start in a dark and slowly as the choreography builds, they turn on the light. From that, I still didn't get what they try to portray in the dance, how the dance can contribute to the exhibition...But I can't judge anything before the presentation finished. But what I can see from the performance where they start the show with the small light on the dances palm and they did an organic movement which to my opinion was the only part of the performance where the music and the dance compliment each other.

Even though I kinda lost in the performance, but I still feel that there was a moment that really excites me as an performing arts student. The movement vocabulary, to me, was really interesting. The dancers, My God, performed very-very well and that was not because of the choreography. But still the combination of older generation and newer generation really caught my attention. They done a very good job as dancers and performance...

But still, on top of all that, I can't see a relation between the piece and the exhibition besides they used the lights as a part of the piece, they dance around the exhibition hall, and.....that's it. If any one can explain it to me PLEASE leave your comment....
